Ida M. Tarbell, The History of The Standard Oil Company, Vol. 1 (Macmillan 1925; original 1905).

Honestly, I could not put this down. Tarbell’s fearless and meticulous account of Rockefeller’s diabolical monopoly reads like a playbook for tactics that remain central to the politics of energy infrastructure to this day: transportation, storage, price and sabotage. As a bonus, the appendices in the early editions are full of incredible primary materials. - DB
