In October 2020, the Grierson Research Group held a remote workshop on two pieces of scholarly work-in-progress: Burç Kostem’s "Of Resonance and Threat: Authoritarian Sentiment and the Coup Attempt in Turkey," an article that examines infrastructural mediation of the ezan (call to prayer) and the relationship between affective resonance and authoritarianism in contemporary Turkey; and Dr. Jordan Kinder’s prospectus for a book based on his doctoral dissertation, entitled "Petroturfing: Refining Canadian Oil in the Age of Social Media," an in-depth analysis of the media practices and strategies of pro-oil interest groups in western Canada, and their implications for environmental politics.

Along with the fascinating content of these two pieces, we learned a great deal about the long process by which scholarly research and writing move through various stages of development and publication. What starts as a paper in a graduate course becomes an article, which becomes a chapter in a dissertation, which becomes a prospectus, which becomes a book. Considering work at both ends of this trajectory, we came to appreciate that the spaces between these stages is where we do our work as scholars, peers and collaborators.
